Riverbend Art Gallery was opened by the late Dennis Cominos the then mayor of Margate on the 17th August 1984. For the next 21 years Riverbend Art Gallery was home to works by many of South Africa’s finest artists including, Dino Paravano, Titta Fasciotti, Rob Wareing, Rob McIntosh, John Smith, Kobus Kotze, Peter Hall, Louis Audie, Richard Rennie, Coral Spenser, Isabel Le Roux, Mark Poisson, Tony De Freitas and many others.

The Gaze Gallery & The Basket Shop

Browse at your leisure in the Gaze Gallery situated next to the famous Waffle House and see some of South Africa's best-known artists and potters, including Barry Dibb and David Walters. There is also an interesting selection of functional and decorative gifts to choose from.
In 1967 the Gallery was developed and opened adjacent to the Waffle House in a building originally planned for extra seating. The first artists were Errol Boyley, Tita Faschiotti, Tony Strickland and Lucy and Brian Wiles. In those early days it was the only Art Gallery on the Coast and sold only paintings and sculpture. As other galleries developed, it was necessary to diversify and start to handle ceramic, glassware and other crafts.
For locally produced quality curios you can also visit The Basket Shop. This outlet for local basket makers, and crafters was started around the same time as the Gaze Gallery. It's objective then was to give the local crafters an outlet for their products. In the those days crafters had to comply with so much red tape under the apartheid government that their unique crafts were being lost to potential buyers and the crafts' people were left wanting for a living.
